The series begins in Sacramento, California, in 1994. High school senior Ilonka, an ambitious and bright student, dreams of attending Stanford University in the fall. Her plans are derailed when she is diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma, a form of cancer. Despite undergoing treatment, Ilonka learns on her 18th birthday that her prognosis is grim, prompting her to search for alternative options. She discovers Brightcliffe, a hospice for terminally ill teens, with a history of miraculous events, including the story of Julia Jayne, a former patient who was inexplicably cured. Convinced Brightcliffe holds answers, Ilonka persuades her foster father, Tim, to take her there.

Upon arriving at Brightcliffe, Ilonka experiences déjà vu and visions eerily similar to those she had before. She meets Kevin, a fellow resident with leukemia, and they bond over their shared experiences. Nurse practitioner Mark introduces Ilonka to the house’s history, including its origins, use as a halfway house during the Great Depression, and its connection to a mysterious cult called the Paragon in the 1940s. Ilonka’s unsettling visions continue as she settles in.

Ilonka meets the other residents: Spence, her peer mentor; Natsuki, who has ovarian cancer; Sandra, who has lymphoma and is deeply religious; Amesh, who has glioblastoma; and Cheri, a mysterious and aloof girl. Her roommate, Anya, reveals that their room once belonged to a Wiccan named Rachel, who believed in a “living shadow” that followed her before she passed away. Ilonka also notices strange chalk symbols under her bed.

That night, Ilonka follows Anya to a secret meeting in the library. There, she discovers the Midnight Club, a group where the residents gather to share scary stories and toast to past, present, and future members. After being discovered, Ilonka shares her own story, blending fact and fiction about Julia Jayne’s miraculous recovery. To join the club, she agrees to a pact: if she dies first, she must try to communicate with the others from beyond the grave.

As the night ends, Ilonka confides in Kevin about her hope of finding a cure at Brightcliffe, inspired by Julia’s story. However, as she returns to her room, she notices a shadowy figure following her, hinting at the ominous mysteries that surround Brightcliffe.
